How to Take Great Family Photos (with your phone!)

As parents, we take hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of photos of our kids every year. From summer adventures and family vacations to everyday moments at home, our phones make it easy to document the little things we never want to forget. While you don't need to be a professional photographer to capture meaningful memories, a few simple phone photography tips can help you take better photos of your children and family. Here are some of my favorite ways to improve your photos using the camera that's already in your pocket.

1. Look for the light!

   In the middle of the day with harsh sun, find a shady spot that gives even light across faces. Or, face the sun and position the sun behind your subjects. Of course, golden hour light about 30 minutes before sunset is going to give you that beautiful glow!

2. Watch for distractions

   Before taking your photo, give a quick glance around your subject to see if there's anything that will distract the viewer's attention from the subject. Avoid things poking out of their heads (like trees), and watch for items like trash cans in the background. I love changing my position or angle until I find a spot that's distraction free.

3. Consider composition

   There are lots of composition "rules" that can create more interesting photos. You can use leading lines, like paths, roads, or fences, to draw the viewer's eye to your subject. Or, you can turn on grid mode on your phone camera (if you have an iPhone, go to Settings -> Camera and toggle on the grid). Position your subject on one of the four spots where the lines cross!

No matter what, the most important part is to take the photo! You'll never regret having the memories from this summer to look back on, even if they're not perfect photos.
