When I’m designing custom wall art for my clients, my first task is to determine which walls would be great for portrait art. Then, I look around at the details of the room. What kinds of natural elements, like stone or wood, are in the room? Are there soft lines or angular shapes? What textures are present? All of these tell me more about the family’s décor style so I can design a piece that looks like it belongs exactly in that spot.

During this phase, I also think about what type of photo would be appropriate for each space. Many of my clients choose to showcase a family portrait in their main living space, where they spend a lot of their time. It’s also popular to feature a gallery wall in a more casual space like a bonus room or main hallway, and a couple’s portrait in the bedroom. There are so many ways to display your portraits so you get to enjoy them on a daily basis, and I love helping my clients dream about the joyful images we can put up on the walls.

Choose Outfits That Fit with Your Home’s Color Scheme

From there, we choose outfits for the photoshoot that will complement the color scheme of the home. If your home is decorated mostly in warm neutrals, we’ll look for a color palette that includes colors like greens, creams, and browns. Depending on your home’s accent colors, perhaps we’ll add in a pop of color like clay or rusty orange. If your style tends to the cooler side, we might choose colors like blues, grays, and whites. These color choices also play into deciding which photoshoot location will provide the background that will bring it all together.

Once all that is decided, we proceed to the photoshoot and create beautiful images featuring your family. After the photoshoot, we’ll select the perfect image for each location in your home where you want to feature wall art.
